About Djembes- Djembes are goblet shaped wooden drums with goatskin heads. Their sound is quite powerful. Some consider them to be "magic instruments". They are played by hand. They were originally used to give courage to troops in battle and to give more energy to workers tilling and harvesting the fields. They originated from the Mandenke people, who populated regions of what is now Guinea, Mali and Sierra Leone.

For information about other traditional Guinean instruments, please see our "study guide".

About Krins- Krins are slit drums, made by hollowing out logs. They are of varying sizes and are played with two sticks. Krins orginated in Guinea's forest region. They were used to communicate messages over great distances, and have been dubbed the original "African telephone."

For information about other traditional Guinean instruments, please see our "study guide".
